in this way stand firm in the Lord - 2nd Sunday of Lent, 2010

Posted by Fr. Matt on February 25, 2010 at 10:37 PM

Lenten greetings to all of you, my dear friends in Christ.  As we begin this second week of Lent, Mother Church provides us with great words of encouragement from the mouth of God. Could She know that during these days of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, our weakness will be exposed, and we will be tempted to give in to our desires – to give up our penances?

Our Father – the Author of Love –teaches us not to despair, because He is with us as, from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”  Like those great Apostles,we somehow know that we want to follow this Jesus – but like them, we also can begin to wonder and question in our hearts whether or not we can truly trust Him.  Perhaps we even forget sometimes Who He is and what He has done for us and that He is with us.

At times, I feel almost compelled to focus solely on the mundane:  budgets to be accounted for, tasks to be completed, deadlines to be met … How easy it is to become anxious about all these things and even conduct {our}selves as enemies of the cross of Christ – acting as if our God is {our} stomach.  How can I fast?  How can I give to others what I think I need for myself?  How can I waste time in prayer?

During Lent, our Mother constantly reminds us of who we truly are – that our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.  He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body.  As we welcome Home our brothers and sisters this Lent, let’s keep that in mind and reach out with love and hospitality and generosity so that all may feel welcomehere among us.  Let us remember to think of others before ourselves – for that is the way of our Father, who gives us His Son to be with us always and everywhere.  Let us never grow anxious about the things of this world, for Jesus is right here with us.  Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord.

Peace to all of you, my friends, this Holy Day, and to all who love the Lord in simplicity of heart,

Fr. Matt
